Celebrate Juneteenth Freedom

History of Juneteenth

Join us as we honor the rich history of Juneteenth at ACC. This annual event commemorates the announcement of the emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. This was a pivotal moment in American history which occurred two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. For many years, the African American Cultural Center at ACC has proudly led the programming and logistics for our community-wide Juneteenth celebration.

Juneteenth has deep roots in the Eastside of Austin and is now recognized as a national holiday since June 17, 2021. All are welcomed to ACC’s Eastview campus to enjoy a variety of activities such as live music, outdoor sports, games, cultural talks, and more!

At the heart of our celebration lies a commitment to breaking the chains of slavery and challenging the narratives and stereotypes that have impacted Black communities. The African American Cultural Center works year-round towards this goal, and Juneteenth is our chance to come together as a community in solidarity and joy. We invite you to join us in celebrating resilience and culture as we commemorate this important day.
